As we reach into the middle of the semester, it is now finally time for me to start thinking about what my project will become. I have researched much information about my topic, Retro Culture, and I feel as though I have a very solidified idea as to what form this venture will take me. Here is my revised and finalized Project document;
Title: Retro Revived
Overview:
My interests and hobbies are heavily influenced by retro and nostalgic elements such as fashion, technology, and music. I have noticed that in today’s culture, we are also very inspired by trends ranging from the 70s to the 90s. Using this knowledge, I want to look at why retro culture is making a return in the 21st century. I will analyze the four main aspects of retro culture such as nostalgia, music, technology, and fashion, and why today’s generations, Gen Z and Millenials, are so infatuated with retro culture. I believe that because of resources like the internet, old trends will have increasing rates of exposure. Many people will continue to revamp other generations and be inspired by their styles.
Project Brief:
Retro technology is a pivotal influence to retro culture as a whole. People feel nostalgic about retro tech, and also yearn for a time before smartphones, which have become an all in one device. Nostalgia plays a major factor to market to those who have an emotional attachment to these gadgets, and share them with a newer generation that has never been exposed to them. With the idea of retro tech, especially in the forms of polaroid pictures and vinyl records, people feel more attached to physical objects compared to digital. They are seen as more lively and feel more personal to the person. Because of this, I will create a magazine for a theoretical retro company. In this magazine, retro tech such as vinyls, CDs, Polaroids, and 35mm film cameras will be displayed in the 21st century as displaced objects. This will show how today’s generation can use these old products in new and creative ways.
My focus:
My main focus will be to examine the current forms of the selected retro technology, and create a new form that will serve as something useful while still being able to identify the original form. This will still give those a feeling of nostalgia while showing that this generation can make something new with older technology.
Objectives/ Questions:
Will this rinse and repeat pattern happen again with the next generation?
What dictates which aspects of retro trends get to come back versus others?
Are companies/ industries able to be revived thanks to the growing community of those who use these trends?
How do companies today keep up with this growing amount of those who support old trends?
How does the gen z generation feel nostalgic about something they were not around to experience it? Does this sense of nostalgia differ between those who have lived it and those who have imagined it?
