Op art deals with the perception of optical effects. This form of art was derived from geometric abstraction and peaked during the 1950s which during this time psychology was on the rise. Op art was produced mainly in black and white and made optical illusions to the eye. Black and white was the best way to show contrast and to create very distinct illusions. Abstraction was a major factor in this form of art in order to correctly mess with the viewer's perception. The movement did not gain traction until the 1960s. Time magazine coined the term “Op Art” in an article. People such as Victor Vasarely, and Bridget Riley created the modern op art this is noticed today. By experimenting with perception and depth he and other op artist were able to push the boundaries of this form of art. In 1965 op art was featured in an exhibit in the Moma.
