German Artist Kurt Schwitters was known for his excellent work of collaging which started in 1918. From John Elderfield's book titled "Kurt Schwitters" you dive deep into Schwitters ideas and methods for his well known collage work. He believed that everything in a collage had meaning and that nothing was without purpose. Each item he used in collages such as "Merzbild Rossfett", and "Das Kreisen", where there to exhibit a certain mood and place with precision and thought. I love how in all of his works everything is very organic and can be found anywhere. From playing cards to pieces of a wheel, you can see how Schwitters expressed this feeling of collaging by finding objects anyone can find and create such beautiful pieces. It really takes an interesting mind like his to see everyday items and create these works. Though things were placed

carefully, he did not shy away from abstraction. His technique of abstraction created pieces that did not have one piece of the collage outshine the other. I think its important especially in collage work to have each piece function in unity and to create perfect harmony with one another to create the bigger picture. I feel as though Schwitters did in fact have this gift to create calm and collective pieces that each part of it is directly seen and is a strong piece of art all together.
